Believe it or not it was a remake of an old early talkie from the 1930s called "The Man Who Played God" about a pianist deafened in an explosion, who does not fall to pieces but finds a new reason to live by helping others (usually anonymously).  Liberace's part was played by George Arliss (not one of his biographical films like "Disraeli" or "House of Rothschild" or "Cardinal Richelieu"), and Ms Dru's part was played by a young Betty Davis (who says in her biography "Mother Goddamn" that Arliss was not only very professional but also a good friend and advisor to her regarding her career).
